Oxford is such a cool little town. It just oozes literature, so you can imagine my excitement over being here. Yesterday afternoon I perused two of the bookstores on the downtown square. There was a wall just plastered with autographed photos of authors who have visited the store for book signings. There were at least 1/2 a dozen signed books on the shelves when i visited. Granted, not by famous authors, but this place just draws authors. And those who live here just seem to have a knack for the art. After my visit to the bookstores *sigh* I took my new copy of "The Sound and the Fury" and sat in Faulkner's back yard for a good read. Nothing like being on the scene of a story, though I must say, it is quite the confusing read. The firs 60-some pages are narrated by a mentally handicapped man who constantly switches between past and present with no warning, introducing new characters with no explanation of who they are or why they're relavant to anything. It makes my head spin. My first encounter with Faulkner was in am. lit. 2 and it was not a pleasant one. The novel we read had paragraph sentences and i had one short week to read it. But, i figured what with living within walking distance from the man's house, i should give him another shot. Perhaps "the sound and the fury" will prove a more rewarding read. If not, when I'm an english prof. at least i can say i've read faulkner while sitting in his yard. How cool does that sound?
